Presentation LinkSession Resources LinkThis session will enable participants to experience coding and computer science while learning about the relevance of computer coding today and in the future. Discover why coding has become a hot topic in California education and be updated on the California State Computer Science Standards Advisory Committee work.
Each participant will choose from 6 hands-on coding and computer science sessions in a self-paced exploratory format:
- Sphero: Play with a programmable robot designed to help students apply math and critical thinking skills.
- Ozobot: Draw a path with a marker for a robot to follow to introduce programming and sequencing to students.
- Hour of Code: Experience “block” coding to play simple games that require critical thinking and problem solving.
- Introductory Paper Coding: Use a low technology option to learn the basic concept of coding on paper.
- Basic web page: Write introductory html code to create your own teacher/administrator website.
- Computer Science: Explore the difference between computer science and coding with activities such as text compression, encryption and app design to help students understand how computers work and the implications for their use.
This session will wrap-up with a debrief and discussion of the exploratory stations and implications of coding and computer science for your school/district.
