The presentation will provide an overview of our award-winning education model of incorporating a thematic, interdisciplinary, project-based approach (TIP) for our at-risk students. LACOE’s Road To Success Academy is an award-winning model of instruction and intervention as well as a systematic change in the current juvenile justice court schools. The approach features interdisciplinary, project-based learning focused on themes that address students’ academic and mental health needs. It incorporates activities to promote self-esteem and empower students to make positive choices and behavior change. Since it's launch in 2010, the Road To Success Academy (RTSA) model continues to yield success. RTSA uses the Northwest Evaluation Assessment (NWEA) to measure growth in math and reading. The test is administered every 60 days due to the transiency of our student population. These assessments show that, on average, students are demonstrating close to one year of growth in English Language Arts and a half-year of growth in math. Suspensions have decreased by 80% due to more students’ engagement in the classroom and teachers providing positive behavior strategies in lieu of suspension.
