School districts across the country are quickly revising the role of principal supervisor to reflect recent research indicating a need for a stronger focus on improving principal performance. While many districts are just beginning to make such changes, a number of others that have been leading this transformation are learning that there is more to supporting principals than just revising the role of their supervisors. This session will focus on what the University of Washington Center for Educational Leadership is learning about creating system-wide support for principals. In particular, recent research regarding school leader expertise will be shared, leading to a deeper understanding of what principals need in order to be successful, and how to enlist central office leaders to work differently to develop and support principals’ instructional leadership expertise.

Session Objectives:

Participants will:
1) Become familiar with the Measures of Instructional Leadership Expertise (MILE) assessment results in terms of implications for supporting principal instructional leadership.

2) Understand the two-part equation for instructional effectiveness and how the 5 Dimensions of Teaching and Learning (5D) and the 4 Dimensions of Instructional Leadership (4D) frameworks can support teachers and leaders efforts to improve teaching and learning.

3) Become familiar with the Principal Support Framework, and how central office leaders are building a system to develop principals’ instructional leadership expertise.

Session Strategies:
• Quick information sharing
• Ample time to interact and process in pairs and groups
• Facilitated questions and answers
• Each participant will be provided with key teaching and learning, and leadership frameworks developed at the University of Washington

Session Strand: Continuous Improvement with a heavy focus on equity throughout!
